DarkOrbit starships in battle

Editor's pick

DarkOrbit, twenty years in orbit

DarkOrbit opened in 2006 as a Flash game and is still running in 2026. When browsers dropped Flash at the end of 2020, Bigpoint moved it to a small desktop client. You register on the website and fly through that client.

The basic loop takes ten minutes to learn: fly out, shoot aliens, bring the cargo home, upgrade. The depth arrives later, with drone formations, ammunition types and the company wars on shared maps. Expect a slow first week while your ship catches up.

  • Three companies, MMO, EIC and VRU, each with its own home sector.
  • Upgrades come gradually, so the hours you put in show on your ship.
  • Clans fight for battle stations on contested maps.

Before you start

Four checks that apply to DarkOrbit and to every other game on the list.

  • Create the account on the publisher's own site, the one the Play Now button opens, and not through a third-party page.
  • Check whether the game asks you to install a launcher, and download it only from the official site.
  • Read the age limit and the rules on in-game purchases before you pay for anything.
  • Use a password you do not use anywhere else.
